In the world of self-improvement an oft taught concept is “Self-Talk.” The idea is that your inner voice speaks to you and you will act out what you hear. The powerful realization is that if you can rewrite the script, then you can change your behavior to a preferred behavior. This is most powerful when your self-talk is directed toward your belief system, the root of your behaviors and actions. Simply trying to tell yourself to change your actions addresses only the surface and therefore does not produce lasting change.

When it comes to spiritual issues, God elevates self-talk to a much higher game. I call it Spirit Talk. When you accept Christ, Jesus promises to give us the Holy Spirit:

“If you love me, obey my commandments. ¹⁶ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. ¹⁷ He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”
Jesus Christ in John 14:15-17 (NLT)

The Spirit in us is the new “voice” to speak into our belief system. He is the one who transforms us. God gave us amazing minds that can be transformed by instilling new beliefs… such a beautiful thing!

But there is even more going on here. The Holy Spirit takes up residence in us: God in us. Now this is something special. It’s not us simply filling ourselves with scripture. By itself, scripture is simply information. Even the world can take in parts of scripture and act it out, but the world does not receive the Spirit, your advocate and guide. He is the one who changes you at the root.

Jesus speaks in ways that often seem foreign to us.

“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. ²¹ I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.
Jesus Chris in John 17:20-21 (NLT)

I’m always trying to grasp the full extent of what Jesus means by being one, “me in him and him in me” …perhaps I will fully understand one day. Clearly, his imagery conveys the idea of being “Interwoven” – separate entities, but so closely integrated that we can’t be separated. Father, Son, Holy Spirit and us; separate but at the same time, one.  Very cool to know even if I don’t understand it completely!

When Moses instructed the Israelites to “…Tie them [God’s laws] to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. ⁹ Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”           he was teaching what he himself had learned:

Interweave God into your entire being  

…. Scriptures, knowledge, feelings…. the entirety of God in you. The Holy Spirit himself must do this. No human effort will suffice. It’s not merely a matter of repeating “scriptural self-talk” to change your behavior. When the Spirit talks, when he causes you to notice something, when he raises up feelings in you…your whole self is affected. The Spirit engages all of you and even your surroundings (other people, nature, events, etc.) to interweave you with God. Once again, God has thought of everything.
