Drip, Drip, Drip…
“For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings.”
~ Job 33:14-16 (NLT)
A Steady Drip
We get so caught up in the day’s problems that we can miss hearing some key messages from God. Sure, we pray, asking him for help with the situations we find ourselves in. “God, help me!” Some might even say they hear instructions from God to do this or not do that. Yet God also seems to speak on certain themes over periods of time as part of his agenda to help us become more like Jesus. Again and again, he pokes us… a word here, a testimony there. You may not even recognize it, much like the steady drip of a faucet turns into background noise. Is it time to start noticing?
Attitude Shift
One theme God has been “dripping” on me is to make a shift in attitude. It’s the old frog boiling in a pot of water analogy. The problems of the world have grown heavier and heavier. Of course, the world has always been in crisis. It’s just that with COVID and the constant bombardment of the media, the world seems more divided than ever. In spite of my efforts to avoid and not dwell on it, I know it’s there and it has been stealing my happiness.
In comes God… drip, drip, drip.
First, he helps me notice that my body aches and is tired. Sleep does not relieve it. In fact, God wakes me in the night to think. The next morning, I read this during my devotional time:
“I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.”
King David | Psalm 63:6-7 (NLT)
Some time passes. I go out with some friends, should be fun… and it was… sort of. We did all of the fun things, and they are super friends… but in some ways, it felt like we just went through the motions. You know what I mean? Then I read this over the course of the next couple of days:
“A relaxed attitude lengthens life…”
Proverbs 14:30 (NLT)
and,
“…for the happy heart, life is a continual feast.”
Proverbs 15:15 (NLT)
You might call it a one-two punch from God.
All of this dripping came within the backdrop of an even bigger theme. It seems every sermon I’d heard for the last 6 months (and there were many), and every book I’d read pointed to God’s ultimate sovereignty. My wife and I were questioning our belief in this daily. We had been praying constantly for God’s intervention in a matter… day after day, seemingly no answer. I wondered, “Is my joy dependent on God doing everything I ask?” I knew the answer.
God was telling me it was time for an attitude adjustment. I reasoned, “If God is truly sovereign (and I believe he is), and I am saved and belong to him (I believe this too) … I should be beaming with joy!” It was simply a matter of me flipping the switch really. So glad I took notice!
Evangelistic Heart
Another theme God has been dripping on me is having a heart for evangelism. With each drip, I feel a bit of a sting. I know a number of “hard-wired” evangelists. We walk into a restaurant together, the next thing you hear is them asking the waiter “Do you know Jesus?” I’m continually amazed… at their boldness and my lack.
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.”
Jesus Christ | Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)
Scripture after scripture, testimonies at church…drip, drip, drip. As I grow closer to God, my heart grows more like his; he wants all to be saved…I do too! My boldness is growing. Much further to go but I’m taking steps.
Meaningful Life
What are the themes is God dripping on you? Do you need an attitude adjustment like me? Are you evangelizing the saving power of the Jesus? Is he wanting you to spend more time with him? Is it time to take a step into a fresh devotional time or a dedicated day of prayer and fasting?
One theme that is prominent upon all of us is God’s desire for us to live a meaningful life. Drip, drip, drip… he pops questions into our minds:
- What am I here for?
- What am I supposed to do with my life?
- Isn’t there more to life than this?
- Will I do this for the rest of my life?
- What will be my legacy?
Will you let his questions go, unanswered? Will you ignore God’s efforts to get your attention?
God is not keeping the answers secret. He has filled the scriptures with his intentions for you and your life.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
The Apostle Paul | Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
Not only has he planned on you to fulfill the mission he designed your for, he is counting on you to fulfill it.
I hear your question already, “The Bible speaks in generalities, how can I answer these questions specifically for me?” I get it. I had this question too, but there is a way. I know, because I found my answers and God has me here to help you find yours. That’s my mission!
