No Unfinished Business
“When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return. You, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know when the master of the household will return—in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. Don’t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning.”
~ Jesus Christ | Mark 13:34-36 (NLT)
More than a Dream
Have you ever had a recurring dream? That it’s reoccurring makes me look deeper for meaning… it must be really important if my brain keeps trying to process it. Unfinished business I figure.
One such dream I have is that, though I am well past graduation, I realize I’ve failed to turn in a key assignment. Panic races through my veins, and I’m frustrated, unable to get it turned in. Filled with guilt, it’s painful! I feel such relief when I wake, glad it was just a dream. Pfew!
This story Jesus tells us closes a dialog about the ever-nearing end times. Though first told to the disciples, it has serious implications for each of us. Each day, the day of the Lord comes closer. Each day, our lives are a day shorter. You are closer and closer to finding yourself on your knees in front of Jesus.
“….Did you compete the assignment I gave you?”
Will he find you dreaming, your assignment unfinished? There’s no waking with relief from this one… it’s more than a dream.
It’s Serious Business
What is valuable in your life? After rattling off a list of material things (houses, cars, adventure, health, investments), most, having thought for a minute, would list relationships with people important to them (spouse, children, relatives, friends). Of course! Every one of us needs such relationships…. Is that all?
“But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”
The Apostle Paul | Acts 20:24 (NLT)
The Apostle Paul went beyond to say that everything we might consider important on Earth is dwarfed by the importance of him finishing the assignment he received from Jesus. Does he sound crazy?
King Solomon said it this way:
“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!” What do people get for all their hard work under the sun?
King Solomon | Ecclesiastes 1:2-3 (NLT)
All to say that your life, relationships and all else under the sun, is nothing without Christ. It’s from this most important relationship that you receive your assignment, an overarching responsibility to make a significant kingdom impact while here behind enemy lines. Fully honoring your relationship with Jesus requires that you seriously take on the assignment he asks you to complete. Paul did…. his relationship with Jesus was so meaningful that he placed his assignment from him above all else.
“Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Jesus Christ | Matthew 28:18-10 (NLT)
Not to dismiss your highly valued earthly relationships, your assignment will be carried out with them and for them. Enduring relationships are the building block of the universe and they all start through your relationship with Jesus. His great commission is a call for the entire body to enlarge his kingdom. Your assignment is a supporting role as Jesus fulfills his mission. It’s serious business.
What’s Your Unfinished Business?
What’s even crazier than Paul’s statement is that the vast majority of believers have no clue what their assignment is. Shocking given they might well consider their lives worth nothing without using them to finish that assignment. It’s no wonder so many feel unfulfilled.
Do you know your assignment?
I’ve heard plenty of excuses: “Only certain people are called”, “I’m just trying to survive”, “I just focus on being a good person”, “I serve at the church twice a month”, “I’m waiting for God to tell me but he doesn’t talk to me” …the list goes on and on.
Do you really believe your life is worth so little? Jesus thinks otherwise. What will you say to him on that fateful day?
One excuse I get and personally relate to is, “I want to know, but I don’t know how to figure it out.” How can one complete something if he doesn’t know what he is supposed to do? I’ve been there and can say I have good news! There is a path find your crystal-clear answer, your Life Mission. Captured in 7 words or less, there will be no more excuses, no more guessing.
